Have you ever heard the saying, “I scream, you scream, everyone screams for ice cream?” With the beginning of the summer season, I thought it only appropriate to review a place that serves up one of my favorite foods. My husband and I have even talked about writing a book, travelling around to all the small towns around the United States, experiencing good old fashion homemade ice cream and hearing their stories.
Yes, I know going to an ice cream parlor or a local dairy is not a restaurant, but….it could be. It contains some of the basic food groups – dairy and fat. And if you add bacon (this place has it) that’s even better. And everyone has a favorite ice cream place, right? I would love to hear about yours. Put your comments and follow me on yummyreservations.blog. If you send me a picture and favorite flavor, I’ll post it!
Our favorite, about 15 minutes from our house, is Bonkey’s (1 of their 4 locations) in New Freedom, Pennsylvania. Their location was originally an old movie theater and it still has all the old charm – even the original marque outside for advertising. There is definitely nothing fancy when you drive up to it, or walk in the door. Their ice cream flavors can change (and run out), so their menu board is all handwritten. Other than normal flavors, you may find ones like “Great Googly Moogly”, Coconut Cream Pie (with pieces of crust in the mix), Pancakes Railroad Tracks, Float Cookie Monster and even one of the basic food groups I talked about with “Wild Hogs Bacon.” Their ice cream is fresh – delivered within 3 days of milking the cows. And it is important to note that the ice cream is real milk, cream and sugar! Their other Pennsylvania location is in Stewartstown and 2 more are in Delaware. Check out their website at www.bonkeys.com. I’ve been told, from a reliable source, that the owner took the same course at Penn State that Ben & Jerry’s did. They didn’t just teach them how to make ice cream, but the whole process from cow to finished product. Bonkey’s ice cream is definitely smooth, creamy and packed full of flavor. You won’t be disappointed.
And if you’re not a huge ice cream fan (that seems crazy to me), they also serve other yummy, cool refreshments like snoballs (which is how they originally started). I will also add that all the young people that work at Bonkey’s are dedicated to serving you the best scoop ever. They don’t even get upset if you just want to try a small sample of some of their unusual flavors. So, walk, don’t run to your favorite ice cream hangout, or if you’re not too far away from Bonkey’s, I hope you’ll stop in for a scoop or two and tell the owners I sent you. P.S. I greatly apologize for the picture below of the ice cream that has already been partially consumed. It is Bonkey’s “Birthday Cake” and also “Great Googly Moogly (pieces of whoppers – yummmmm!) I just couldn’t stop myself.

Love that place!! We like to ride our bikes the seven miles to get there just to justify the indulgence!!
